During the meeting, discussions were held on the status, challenges, and recent developments concerning refugees in light of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) visit to Pakistan. At the outset, the Minister of Safron stated that after efforts by him and the concerned departments, the Proof of Registration (PoR) cards for Afghan refugees have been extended for one year. He emphasized that Pakistan does not wish to forcibly expel the refugees but seeks their dignified and voluntary return. The Afghan Ambassador expressed gratitude to Pakistan for hosting the refugees and appreciated the recent decision to extend the migration cards. He suggested that if these cards were extended for a longer period, it would have been even better and would have provided long-term benefits for the refugees. Mr. Shakeeb added that the Islamic Emirate also desires the voluntary return of the refugees to their homeland. He stated that these refugees are our own people, and we welcome them back. In this regard, the Afghan government has formed high-level committees and is making efforts to ensure the refugees return to Afghanistan with dignity. He further emphasized that Afghan refugees have been residing in Pakistan for the past 40 years and have not only caused no harm but have also played a significant role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy. Therefore, security issues and political relations should not be linked to the refugees. During the meeting, a proposal was made to establish a joint committee between the Afghan Embassy, the Ministry of Safron, and the Afghan Commissionerate to address refugee-related issues promptly. The Afghan Acting Ambassador also stressed the need for and importance of coordination between the Afghan Embassy, the Ministry of Safron, UNHCR, and other related organizations dealing with refugees.
